The Rutherford Downhill Derby is an exciting, annual town event providing kids and adults with the opportunity to design, build and race gravity powered race carts.

Working alone or in teams, kids, adolescents and adults can all take part. Different organizations like the Boy and Girl Scouts, High School STEM classes, Rutherford Police, Fire and EMS, local builders, etc. might work together to design and build carts. And parents can have the opportunity to work with their children on a fun family project.

The event is an opportunity to not only design the fastest carts, which will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each classification, but also to encourage "Best Technical Design", "Best Artistic Design" and "Peoples' Choice" awards

With the increased focus on science, technology, arts, engineering and math in schools, a gravity powered race cart is a great opportunity to explore those disciplines in a tangible and fun way. Competitors will be challenged to come up with a cart design that will not only be fast, but can actually be built and maybe even look good. And as an annual town event, local businesses and residents can benefit from the activity and enthusiasm it will generate.
